Dawn is breaking. The east side of anywhere would be good right now. I’m going into new territory today. Bears are thick and they are just out of hibernation with their cubs. Got to be careful. All the ones I have run into have been more scared of me then me of them.
Beautiful day; water is so calm. The shore line is all torn up from high tides and big winds from the winter. A lot of rotting trees, perfect for finding fungi.
Found lots of driftwood on the east side and some nice grey roots. Seen a big deer in the interior; felt him before I saw him. The ground shook as he thundered past me – great big horns! Twenty feet away from me; scared me to death! He was beautiful! Mustn’t tell anyone; the hunters would be over here looking for him. Awesome sight!
So quiet here, my hearing seems intensified. Not to many smells… yet . Spring has really yet to arrive; neither have the ticks (or the foreigners).
Found lots of lichen in the interior; a lot of different colours. I see why they make dyes with lichen.
Found a nice barrel head! Excited! Don’t find many of them anymore. This one is a different size; never seen one before like this one. Got to do a history check on it.This will likely be my next piece. It excites me.
Starving! Just realized I lost my back pack! Crap!Must have forgotten it down the road I was on earlier (lunch, binoculars, knife, compass). Got to go back.
Found it! In the middle of the friggin road! Must have forgotten it on the back of the car and drove off with it on there. I’m glad there are hardly any cars way out here. Lunch!!
Nearing mid- sun and the smells of spring are stonger. Tons of birds talking to each other. The shadows and the light—fantastic. Small ponds, green algae-colours are intense.
Ten new roads put in, all with big gates and no trespassing signs up. When will they ever learn? You know the old saying… when in Rome! Our coastline is all bought up by foreigners. Hope they play by our rules here.
Excited to find out more about this barrel head I found.Heading home.Great day!
After a lot of inquires – found out that my new treasure is called a half- barrel. They stopped making them in the 60’s. It’s the only one I have ever seen. Neat! I have found swish barrels, a punchin’(molasses) barrel, a butt barrel .Some were for liquor; some had spices in them brought from India; some had molasses and some had pickled fish. I can’t seem to find out what a half barrel was actually for.Great find!
